Practical Nurse Education Coordinator

About the position

The College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA) is a non-profit regulatory organization focused on protecting Alberta healthcare users by regulating the professions of Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Health Care Aides (HCAs). They set and maintain standards to ensure safe, competent, and ethical healthcare services. This full-time permanent position involves coordinating the CLHA’s practical nurse education program approval process. The role serves as the primary point of contact for post-secondary institutions (PSIs), facilitating reviews of new and established practical nurse education programs, and overseeing the ongoing monitoring and annual evaluation of approved programs. The coordinator is responsible for appointing program review teams, managing the review process, and ensuring clear communication regarding guidelines, timelines, and documentation. They will advise PSIs on education standards and policies, and continuously assess and suggest improvements for current processes, policies, and documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee the approval, monitoring, and evaluation of practical nurse education programs to ensure reviews are completed consistently, transparently, and in accordance with CLHA standards and established processes.
  • Establish program review schedules, coordinate and support review teams, oversee review reports and follow-up submissions, and ensure timelines and reporting requirements are met.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging healthcare, education, legislative, and regulatory trends affecting practical nurse education and contribute to the ongoing improvement of education standards, policies, review processes, and tools.
  • Build collaborative relationships with PSIs, government, employers, and other partners, providing guidance and subject matter expertise on practical nurse education and program review requirements.
  • Establish measures to evaluate review activities, identify opportunities for improvement, and support consistent and defensible outcomes.
  • Support the Director in departmental planning, resource allocation, budgeting, and the delivery of the Education Department work plan.
  • Provide subject matter expertise to CLHA leadership, advisory committees, and internal departments on matters related to practical nurse education.
  • Orient and support program review team members and the Education Standards Advisory Committee (ESAC).
  • Contribute to cross-departmental initiatives, and ensure education activities remain aligned with CLHA's strategic priorities and public protection mandate.

Requirements

  • An active professional nursing practice permit in good standing with no restrictions is required.
  • University degree in adult education, nursing, public administration, or business administration is required; a diploma and relevant experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in nursing or a related position, preferably within a regulatory and/or post-secondary environment.
  • Must speak, read, and write English fluently.
  • Satisfactory professional and criminal reference checks.
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with program review or accreditation or education program processes is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and policies impacting the practical nurse profession.
  • Ability to travel provincially and nationally.
