Labourer II

Join our team and gain valuable experience across a variety of trades while making a real impact on the upkeep of critical city infrastructure.<br><br>As a Labourer II, you'll be a vital part of our city-wide maintenance team, performing a variety of tasks like minor construction, repairs, and general upkeep. This role requires a basic understanding of trade practices and involves interacting with customers and vendors. You may also have the opportunity to lead casual labourers during busy periods.<br><br><strong>What will you do?<br><br></strong><ul><li> Clean and maintain roofs (including repairs, shingle installation, snow removal, and eavestrough cleaning), move and install furniture/equipment, and perform site maintenance (garbage/debris removal) </li><li> Inspect, adjust, clean, and replace air filters and panels, lubricate HVAC components, wash reusable filter media, and clean heating/cooling coils </li><li> Assist building trades teams with their tasks </li><li> Operate hand and power tools, service vehicles, and maintain a truck stock of tools and materials </li><li> Assist various trades staff with their duties and Journeyperson trades staff with inspections </li><li> Perform safety checks on equipment like safety stands, lifting slings, and hoists </li><li> Ensure a safe and accessible worksite, including proper setup of scaffolding, ladders, and barriers </li><li> Provide daily reports on work progress and equipment/system conditions </li><li> Contribute to a safe workplace by actively participating in health and safety meetings and programs </li><li> Maintain an inventory of tools and materials <br><br><br></li></ul><strong>Qualifications:<br><br></strong><ul><li> Completion of Grade 10 (or higher or equivalent) </li><li> One year of experience in the applicable work area (examples may include building maintenance and repair, maintenance of mechanical systems in commercial buildings, roofing and/or others, depending on the applicable work area) <br><br><br></li></ul><strong>Assets:<br><br></strong><ul><li> Valid First Aid Certification <br><br><br></li></ul><strong>Skills required for success:<br><br></strong><ul><li> Some knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of specific work assignments </li><li> Some knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved with the assigned work </li><li> Ability to use the hand and power tools, equipment and materials used to complete work assignments </li><li> Ability to understand and execute verbal and written instructions, including the ability to maintain basic records and interpret plans/sketches </li><li> Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate well with others and foster strong working relationships </li><li> Ability to work independently, including multitasking and organizing work tasks </li><li> Ability to perform basic computer tasks, such as entering time, using email for communication and calendar for time management, as receiving/managing work orders </li><li> Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( https://bit.ly/4brRrXm ) </li><li> Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion <br><br><br></li></ul><strong>Conditions of Employment:<br><br></strong><ul><li> Ability to pass and maintain task-specific safety and equipment training, such as fall arrest, confined spaces, aerial work platform </li><li> Capable of passing a job-related physical abilities evaluation (F.A.R.E. test) and pre-employment City medical examination </li><li> Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position </li><li> Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position </li><li> Hire is dependent on Police Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement </li><li> Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent) </li><li> Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position <br><br><br></li></ul><strong>Work Environment:<br><br></strong><ul><li> Physical ability to perform medium to heavy manual labour for extended periods of time in various weather and environmental conditions, including bending, lifting, climbing ladders and working at heights <br><br><br></li></ul><strong>The City of Edmonton values applicants with a diverse range of skills, experiences and competencies, and encourages you to apply.
