Every year CHEO helps more than 500,000 children and youth from Eastern Ontario, western Quebec, Nunavut and Northern Ontario.<br><br><strong>Position Summary<br><br></strong>Working as a valuable member of the patient care team and under the direction of a Registered Nurse/ Registered Practical Nurse the HCA provides a range of health care services to support the care of patients, their families and their environment.<br><br><strong>Main Responsibilities<br><br></strong>Under the direction and supervision of nursing (RN/RPN), provide holistic patient care by performing activities such as:<br><br><ul><li>Provide constant observation of a patient in keeping with CHEO’s Sitter policy</li><li>Assist with restraining a patient if required</li><li>Accompany a patient to the playroom or other requested location</li><li>Observe and report the patient’s physical and psychological status to nursing staff</li><li>Assist in patient lift and transfers along with positioning, turning and ambulating patients</li><li>Weigh patients</li><li>Feeding, bathing/grooming and toileting</li><li>Assist with observing and noting input and output</li><li>As appropriate, obtain vital sign measurements, report findings to RN/RPN and document appropriately</li><li>Obtain and label non-invasive specimens as directed (i.e. urine)</li><li>Calm restless patients, maintain safety devices as ordered</li><li>Assist with the preparing of deceased patients and assisting with transport to the morgue <br><br></li></ul>Review and follow the plan of care for patients including:<br><br><ul><li>Receive report on patient status and clarify responsibilities for care as needed and appropriate</li><li>Document delivery of patient care on patient flow sheets and other appropriate documentation tools <br><br></li></ul><strong>Assume Responsibility For Maintenance Of Knowledge And Skill By<br><br></strong><ul><li>Participating in indirect activities related to patient care and services provided (i.e. staff meetings, educational in-services etc.) as requested</li><li>Participating in hospital and unit-related programs and other educational activities such as, but not exclusive to: Non-violent Crisis Intervention, Accreditation, Occupational Health & Safety including WHMIS, Fire Safety, Infection Control, Staff meetings/Unit council/Shift Change meetings, Orientation and training of new staff</li><li>Respond to patient/family inquiries (including answering patient call bells) and refer them to the patient’s nurse or Doctor where necessary</li><li>Assist in the preparation/stocking of supplies, material and equipment for use by professional staff</li><li>Maintain good public relations with patients and families by introducing themselves and greeting patients and families</li><li>Perform work in accordance with the provisions of CHEO policies such as Infection Prevention Control, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations as well as all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety</li><li>Respond to Hospital Codes as indicated in the Code policies</li><li>Respond in a timely manner to portering needs within the hospital, carrying the corporate pager as assigned</li><li>Respond to Unit Emergency situations to assist professional staff as directed</li><li>Participate in quality improvement activities such as CHEOnext improvements or unit audits</li><li>Other Related Duties as required <br><br></li></ul><strong>Qualifications<br><br></strong><ul><li>Personal Support Worker / Health Care Aide certificate, or 2nd year RPN students, or 3rd year BScN students, or IEN (Internationally Educated Nurses) (Essential)</li><li>Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills in English (Essential)</li><li>Excellent organizational and time management skills (Essential)</li><li>Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team (Essential)</li><li>Demonstrated ability to understand, interpret and carry out written and verbal instructions (Essential)</li><li>Ability to respond to physical demands (e.g., heavy lifts and transfers, run to codes, do restraints) (Essential)</li><li>Current CPR Healthcare Provider C (Preferred)</li><li>Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) (Essential)</li><li>Bilingual (English/French) (Preferred) <br><br></li></ul><strong>Timeline may be extended or shortened based on operational needs</strong><strong>.<br><br></strong><ul><li> Please note you will be represented by the Laborers International Union of North America (LiUNA). <br><br></li></ul><strong>Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.
