Engineering and Technology Manager (Fintech)

Breezy Digital Solutions, on behalf of our client, a fast-growing Fintech company operating across multiple African markets, is seeking an experienced and highly technical Engineering Manager to join its growing engineering team in Lagos.

The company operates across cross-border payments, pay-in and payout services, agency banking, digital wallets, and high-volume payment infrastructure serving businesses and consumers across Africa.

The Role

We are looking for a hands-on engineering leader with strong Java/Spring Boot expertise, full-stack development experience, and exposure to Android and iOS development.

You will lead a team of engineers, drive technical and architectural decisions, and oversee the delivery of secure, scalable, highly available, and resilient fintech solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of 5+ engineers, driving performance, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Design and architect scalable backend systems using Java/Spring Boot.
  • Oversee end-to-end product development across frontend, backend, and mobile applications.
  • Provide technical leadership across Android and iOS development.
  • Establish and enforce engineering standards around code quality, testing, security, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with Product, Operations, Compliance, and other stakeholders to deliver mission-critical fintech solutions.
  • Design systems capable of handling high transaction volumes with strong availability, scalability, and security.
  • Lead Agile delivery processes, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, and release management.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues across the technology stack.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, tooling, system performance, and developer productivity.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 8–15 years of software development experience, with at least 3–5 years in an engineering leadership role.
  • Strong expertise in Java and Spring Boot or similar enterprise frameworks.
  • Proven full-stack development experience.
  • Hands-on experience building or overseeing Android and iOS applications.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and scaling engineering teams of 5+ developers.
  • Strong knowledge of API design, microservices architecture, relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Experience with AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Strong understanding of CI/CD and DevOps practices.
  • Experience in Fintech, Banking, Payments, or other high-volume transaction environments is highly preferred.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple time zones.

Advanced Requirement: AI-Driven Engineering

The successful candidate must demonstrate practical experience using modern AI-powered development tools, such as GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar tools, across the engineering lifecycle.

This includes leveraging AI for:

  • Requirements analysis and user stories
  • System architecture and design
  • Code development and optimization
  • Automated testing and QA
  • Code reviews and debugging
  • Technical documentation

Candidates should be able to demonstrate how they have used AI to increase engineering velocity and developer productivity without compromising code quality, security, compliance, or governance standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with payment systems, transaction switching, or digital wallets.
  • Knowledge of financial regulations and security standards, including PCI DSS.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Agile/Scrum certification or strong practical Agile delivery experience.
